Innovation Symposium

Introducing the 2021 Innovation Symposium, an RC collaborative effort that will offer students the opportunity to explore and shape the future of the business world!

This Innovation Symposium will bring together undergraduate students, professors, and firms from across Ontario, and will revolve around new developments in technology, finance, and entrepreneurship. Moderated by Rotman Commerce professors, the conference-style event seeks to equip and inspire undergraduate students to leverage new technological advancements and entrepreneurial strategies to aid in the progression of their careers in commerce-related fields and beyond. Themes of the symposium may include: practical applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning models, automation processes in capital markets professions, such as banking or trading, and the emergence of new tech-oriented businesses which are adapting to rapidly-changing financial markets. The Innovation Symposium will also consist of an optional case competition element that attendees may opt-in for.

With the expertise of ~25 firm representatives and recruiters, the symposium will include panels and workshops to tackle specific topics within the business innovation theme, to be determined and developed by partnering clubs. Students will also explore various career path interests and have the opportunity to network with industry professionals. We hope that the Innovation Symposium can become a mainstay event for the Rotman Commerce community to look forward to for years to come.

Get Involved

Don't Get Stuck In The Stone Age. Join the RC FinTech Team To Get Ahead of The Curve.

Each year, FinTech hires 7-10 First Year Interns in the Fall Semester to join our team. RCFTA Interns receive guidance from experienced upper-year students, educating them about the cast array of financial technologies available, and how to implement these technologies to solve various financial problems.

Our First Year Intern Program is designed with the goal of bringing together a group of like-minded individuals while facilitating their transition in the Rotman Commerce community.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, the internship program will consist of two main subcategories: Fincubator, and Bi-Weekly Intern Boot Camp. Fincubator will give all our first-year interns the opportunity to work on and develop their unique FinTech idea and pitch it to a panel of industry leaders near the end of the academic year. The Bi-Weekly Interns Boot Camp will be lead by select members of the RCFTA executive team. The boot camp will cover a list of different topics that are not limited to python for finance, portfolio optimization, valuation methods as well as resume & cover letter writing. These sessions are designed to give the students a stronger professional base than the average first-year Rotman student.

Fincubator

A FinTech Business Incubator Program

Fincubator is a unique and diverse initiative offered by RCFTA during which first-year interns form two groups of four interns and two executives. Throughout the program, the two teams will convene on a bi-weekly basis to develop a FinTech idea within a structured innovation framework. This framework enables both collaborations with one's peers as well as a stable environment for self-directed research and learning. Near the end of the academic year, RCFTA's first-year interns will have the opportunity to pitch their idea to a panel of industry leaders.

Bi-Weekly Intern Bootcamp

Definitely A Lot More Fun Than It Sounds

Over the course of the year, RCFTA's executive team will run a series of internal training sessions encompassing a vast array of topics from portfolio optimization, Python, and financial modeling methodologies. The training sessions target first-year students with a desire to broaden their financial skillset.

Over the course of the academic year, select members of our executive team will host scheduled bi-weekly training sessions geared towards first-year students with a desire to learn and broaden their financial skill set.

The sessions will cover a wide array of different tech and finance-related topics from building a trading algorithm to portfolio optimization and valuation methods. The objective of the boot camp is to give our interns the financial skillset and networking etiquette required to achieve their desired career goals.

Depicted on the right is a portfolio optimization workshop that was open to both our first-year intern class and the general public.
